In December 2012, Victoria Neuville Zajko, a commercial pilot and insurance agent at AIR flew to West Virginia to adopt a puppy from a local rescue. Turbo was the only appropriate name for the pup, who took to flying right from the beginning. Turbo loves to be in the air and is closing in on 100 hours logged in flight.

Inspired from Turbo’s real-life story, Zajko teamed up with newspaper publisher and friend Kelly Kennedy to create a children’s aviation book series, Turbo the Flying Dog. The first book tells shelter dog Turbo’s “tail” as he discovers he will finally have a new home and a family, but learns he must first get there by plane. Turbo has never seen a plane before, let alone flown in one, and as the story unfolds he discovers that he just may enjoy flying! Turbo’s second book, Turbo Learns to Fly, will release just in time for Oshkosh allowing young readers to follow Turbo as he takes his first flight lesson.

Victoria will be in the AIR booth with copies of books one and two from the Turbo series. She is offering a $2 discount on book purchases to those who request an aviation insurance quote during the show.

More about Turbo:

Authors Kelly Kennedy and Victoria Zajko describe the book as a light-hearted adventure for children ages four to eight focused on rescue, family, and aviation. Illustrated by Michelle Zajko, the bright colors and illustrations mimic the real Turbo and his aviation surroundings.

A Simple Path to UAV/UAS Insurance

Thursday, June 11th, 2015

Unmanned aircraft is a fast growing segment of aviation. Remote aerial photography used for weddings or real estate videos, line patrol, surveillance, agriculture and conservation are just a few of trades that are successfully broadening their business with UAV/UAS use. But with this growth comes an increased risk of liability.

Unfortunately, there has been no simple way to get liability insurance for your drone…until now. Previously, operators of smaller UAVs like those used for aerial photography, have had to fill out volumes of paperwork before obtaining a UAV insurance quote. Now thanks to the ingenuity of the aviation insurance agents at Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR), there is a quick and easy way to apply for drone liability insurance!

As the UAV and UAS industry grows, AIR will keep abreast of the latest industry developments and operator needs, making sure you are properly insured for the future. To learn more about unmanned aircraft insurance through AIR, please call us at 877-247-7769 or download our UAV and UAS application today! DC Flying Club Serves Pilots for 40+ Years

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

InnFlyingClubIn July 1967 15 pilots met around a table at the Charcoal Inn in Gaithersburg, MD. After that organizational meeting the Inn Flying Club, named after that very restaurant was formed.  This not-for-profit flying club has been serving student pilots and pilots in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area continuously ever since.

Historically, the Inn Flying Club has owned several Cessna 152s, Cessna 172s, as well as a Cessna 182 and Cessna 207. Currently, they are the proud owners of an IFR equipped Cessna Skyhawk. Each aircraft that has been owned by the club is meticulously cared for by experienced members of the club. Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanics and certified flight instructors are also members of therefore ensuring safe flying through aircraft care and flight training.

Join Inn!

A popular method for cutting aircraft ownership costs is by simply sharing the expenses. This can be done by getting a partner in the aircraft or joining a flying club like the Inn Flying Club. When someone buys a share in an aircraft partnership or a flying club, the annual aircraft costs are distributed amongst the group, resulting in less out of pocket expenses and more time in the air for the pilot.

The Inn Flying club is currently accepting applications for new members! Please visit here to read about the application process.

Why is Bruce the Pilot “So Very Happy”?

Wednesday, May 6th, 2015

Bruce Jenkins and his wife, Barbara fly a Piper Arrow out of Frederick, MD. Bruce shares with us his history in aviation and how flying and placing his insurance with Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) has made him “so very happy”.

As a product of the World War II generation, I was always interested in airplanes and flying. As a young boy, whenever an airplane would pass over I’d be looking up to see if I could identify it. We lived in the country about 20 miles west of Rochester, NY so there wasn’t a great deal of air traffic and most of it was visible because it flew at the mid-altitudes. There was also the occasional Stearman crop duster to watch on our Bruce Jenkinsneighbors’ farms.

When I attended college I took a few lessons in the J3 Cubs the university owned but never soloed because I couldn’t afford the $6/hour rental. That was the dual rate, wet. Those were the days when everything was about 25 cents: a pack of cigarettes, a bottle of beer, a gallon of high-test gasoline, a bowling game, etc.

As soon as I could afford it after graduation from Purdue, getting a job, getting married, buying a house, and doing all the things my generation was expected to do I found one of the local flight schools in Rochester, NY and started taking lessons in Piper Cherokees. I later bought a Cherokee 140 with a partner and earned my instrument rating in that airplane. At the same time my wife became interested in pursuing her private license. We then bought our 1969 Arrow in 1976 and have had it ever since.

All of our flights to different destinations, especially to the west coast, have been some of my favorites. When you can experience something so different from any experience you’ve previously had, that certainly makes an impression. I also remember some of my flights, usually solo, when the sky was so beautiful at sunrise or sunset that I didn’t really want to land.

The best advice I could offer regarding aviation is: “Don’t Wait” If you want to start flying start as soon as you can. If you want to work on additional ratings, start as soon as you can. Because the more you fly, the sooner you add proficiency, the safer you will be as a pilot and the more you will enjoy flying.

After insuring with one direct writing company for years I finally called Aviation Insurance Resources. They saved me over 29%! Jon is the very best insurance agent I have met regarding service and taking an interest in his customers. I also consider him a friend. Interestingly, my very first flight instructor (after college) now owns an airport and FBO in upstate New York (5G0) and has his insurance through AIR, too. All I can say to the professionals at Aviation Insurance Resources is “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy!”

Are you a current client and friend of ours? We’d love to hear how we have made you “So Very Happy”, too! Are you new to AIR? We’d want to make you happy as well! As fellow aircraft owners, AIR understands your needs and challenges in owning an aircraft and/or aviation business. We are aviation insurance experts, providing a full range of aircraft insurance and aviation insurance products to clients of all sizes. We represent all of the major aviation insurance markets so we can offer you the broadest package of protection at the best available rates.

Managing Mitsubishi MU-2 Insurance

Wednesday, April 29th, 2015
MU2

Photo from MU-2aircraft.com

For corporate or cargo operations or perhaps just family flying, the Mitsubishi MU-2 twin turboprop is a perfect aircraft for a pilot or owner wanting something large and fast. Reaching cruise speeds of 320 knots and a range of up to 1,600 miles, Aviation Safety Magazine recently highlighted the MU-2 reporting how this aircraft’s past reputation has greatly improved since the FAA changed the training requirements in this model.

Produced in the late 60’s through the 1980’s, the MU-2 came in two variations: the short body featuring 6-8 seats and the long body that can be equipped with 8 to 14 seats. But it’s not the size of this aircraft that caused pilots to determine it was difficult to fly. As Dave Higdon highlights in Aviation Safety, a closer look needed to be taken at pilot training in the MU-2.

In 2009 the FAA took an unprecedented step to secure safer flying in the MU-2 by mandating a type rating for all who fly it. Currently, only aircraft weighing more than 12,500 pounds require a type rating. The Special Federal Aviation Rule 108 (SFAR 108) lays out the standardized training that has greatly reduced the number of fatalities in the seven years since it was implemented.

Aircraft insurance carriers are becoming more open to insuring the MU-2 and AIR shops all of them, therefore, obtaining the best terms in the market. If you are a current or prospective MU-2 owner, know that you have options. AIR will help explore them for you.

To learn more about how Aviation Insurance Resources can assist you with your Mitsubishi MU-2 or other twin turboprop insurance, please call 301-682-6200. You may also visit AIR PROS.com today and request your insurance quote online!

Wednesday, March 18th, 2015

IMG_20141115_113700A tourist elects to take scenic flight over the Alaskan wilderness while on vacation. Or maybe they are visiting the Grand Canyon and would prefer an aerial view. While visiting friends in Florida, another couple detours for a quick seaplane romantic sunset adventure. Aerial tour operators provide locals and tourists with a unique view of the land all while introducing them to an exciting mode of transportation.

Aerial tours are nonstop flights flown within a 25 mile radius of the departing airport. Each commercial aerial tour provider is required to apply for and obtain a letter of authorization. Popular aircraft for scenic flight tours can range from small four place aircraft to large helicopters. Some companies even provide an extra twist to the flight with biplanes, glider rides and warbird flights.

Here are just a few aerial tour operators we love:

-Florida tour operator, Jones Brothers & Co. Seaplane Adventures, flies vacationers in several Cessnas on floats as well as a Twin Seabee.

-Head north to Burlington, VT to enjoy aerial sightseeing rides over Lake Champlain with Vermont Flight Academy in their Piper PA12 floatplane!

-Explore the mountainous views of Northwest Montana with Kootenai Aviation. They also provide air taxi, real estate and aerial survey services.

Air Reldan of Louisiana offers a variety of fun sightseeing tours with titles such as “Wine & Cheese Flight”, “Mile high Club Flight” “Joy Rides” and even custom flights in turbo prop aircraft
