For corporate or cargo operations or perhaps just family flying, the Mitsubishi MU-2 twin turboprop is a perfect aircraft for a pilot or owner wanting something large and fast. Reaching cruise speeds of 320 knots and a range of up to 1,600 miles, Aviation Safety Magazine recently highlighted the MU-2 reporting how this aircraft’s past reputation has greatly improved since the FAA changed the training requirements in this model.

Produced in the late 60’s through the 1980’s, the MU-2 came in two variations: the short body featuring 6-8 seats and the long body that can be equipped with 8 to 14 seats. But it’s not the size of this aircraft that caused pilots to determine it was difficult to fly. In 2009 the FAA took an unprecedented step to secure safer flying in the MU-2 by mandating a type rating for all who fly it. Currently, only aircraft weighing more than 12,500 pounds require a type rating. The Special Federal Aviation Rule 108 (SFAR 108) lays out the standardized training that has greatly reduced the number of fatalities in the seven years since it was implemented.
