Flying Club Spotlight: The Reading Aero Club

Wednesday, March 11th, 2015

Reading Aero 2015.3.11Reading Regional Airport (KRDG) in Reading, PA is home to one of the oldest continuously operated not-for-profit flying clubs in the United States. Officially founded in 1932 but with roots as early as 1929, the Reading Aero Club has been serving pilots for over eight decades. The clubhouse based on the west ramp of RDG does not resemble its predecessor at their original airfield which was dubbed by its first club members as the “chicken shack”. The modern day clubhouse serves as a location for meetings, social gatherings and a point of contact for aircraft rental. The area is bustling with the activity of 45 pilot members flying two flying club aircraft.

Reading Aero Club history shows the club starting out with two Curtiss-Wright Juniors, then ownership of a Travelair biplane and several Aeroncas. Today, two IFR equipped and meticulously maintained aircraft reside in the club’s hangar: a Piper Archer III and a Cessna 172SP.

The aircraft are available for use by flying club members at inexpensive rates for anything from day trips to instruction. Three member flight instructors are available for student pilots or for those adding on additional ratings. The flying club websites contains an excellent graphic showing student pilots the money they’ll save while flying with the Reading Aero Club versus a typical flight school.

The club has also been very active in giving back through volunteer flights with Angel Flight East, Veterans Airlift Command and Animal Rescue Flights. They are also involved in Reading’s World War II Weekend and Christmas in the air.

What happens if…my hangar collapses?

Wednesday, January 28th, 2015

Not all aircraft insurance claims happen during flight or taxi. Sometimes, your aircraft can be damaged when it is tucked away inside the comfort of your hangar. Strong winds from a storm may cause the hangar to collapse or perhaps a fire is started from a lightning strike or an accelerant in a nearby hangar. Is your aircraft covered? What about the hangar?

The Aircraft

If you carry hull coverage on your aircraft insurance policy, you are protected if there is physical damage to the hull of your aircraft. Do you know what your aircraft is worth? Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) offers a free and easy way to calculate an estimated hull value for your plane. Click here to get your free aircraft valuation and aircraft insurance quote to see that you are properly protected!

The Hangar

A hangar you rent: If you rent a hangar from the airport or city, they may request a copy of your insurance policy to confirm that you have liability coverage. In addition, many airports require the airport to be named as an additional insured on your policy. This is to protect them in case a claim was involved with your aircraft or at your hangar.

Occasionally, hangar owners will request that you have premises liability coverage. This covers bodily injury or property damage connected to the storage of your aircraft. It’s possible that you already have some hangar coverage included in your policy! Some insurance carriers automatically include premises liability coverage in your aircraft insurance policy. If not, it may be possible to add it by endorsement or a hangar liability policy can be started for as low as $500 annually.

A hangar you own: A hangar protects your aircraft and associated contents from the elements. As the owner of the hangar it is your responsibility to not only protect your aircraft and contents, but the people who enter or are around your hangar from bodily harm. A hangar insurance policy can protect your building and provide you with liability coverage.  Protection can also be purchased for loss of business income, electronic equipment, tools, mobile equipment, fuel tanks, and business personal property.

Covered while building: Are you building a hangar and concerned about the hard work going to waste in the case of a freak storm, or someone being injured in its vicinity? Hangar insurance policies can have you covered before your project is complete!

To get started on requesting a hangar insurance quote, complete a quick and easy quote form online here.

Aircraft in your Care

Hangar keepers policies protect you for liability from damage to aircraft under your care. This coverage will reimburse an aircraft owner for any damages to their aircraft that you may be liable for while it is in your possession.

Looking Back on U.S. Sport Aviation Expo 2015

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015

The cloudy days did not conceal the shine in the eyes of vendors, manufacturers, dealers and pilots at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring, Florida last week. Aircraft ranged from Cub Crafters and Legend Cub to the return of Paradise Aircraft and the introduction of the new Groppo Avio Trail. All aspects of light sport aviation were represented at this unique expo.

The mood at the Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) booth was upbeat and positive as we saw an increase in attendance. Numerous pilots were taking advantage of light sport rules and returning to aviation after a long hiatus. Renter pilots were excited to find they could instantly purchase insurance for non-owned light sport aircraft on our website. And a large number of pilots also stopped by to ask questions about amphibious light sport insurance for airplanes like the Searey.

Light sport insurance quote requests included Sonex, Bristell, Tecnam, Evektor, Flight Design, Zenith, Czech Sport and Jabiru aircraft. This proves that enthusiasm for this relatively new aircraft category is still fresh; with many pilots stating the affordability of these aircraft and no need for an aviation medical as reasons why they chose light sport.

New and prospective light sport builders stopped by the AIR booth as well. We offer a builders and restorers insurance program, designed to protect the aircraft during the building or restoring stage regardless of pilot experience and qualifications. Customized with your needs in mind, this policy offers flexible liability and hull coverage options.

Aviation Event Insurance

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014

When was the first time you fell in love with aviation? For many, it’s on a warm summer day, in the middle of the crowd with the smell of popcorn in the air. There’s an announcer over the loudspeaker and everyone is looking up at the sky and listening to the hum of an airplane. You are at your hometown airport. It’s an airshow.

Each year, airshows draw in 11-13 million spectators to airports across the United States. Attracted by thrilling military formation teams and daring individual aerobatic performers, airshows bring in needed revenue to local airports and are great advertising for small towns and big cities. Often, airport general liability policies exclude coverage for fly-ins and air shows. Whether running a small fly-in event to a large airshow such as EAA AirVenture, it is important that the show host is properly protected.

To get started, there are a few things the agent will need to know:

  • Event dates

  • Estimate total attendance
  • Planned crowd control

Airshow insurance coverages include:

  • Bodily injury & property damage
  • Medical payments

With options to protect:

  • Personal/advertising injury
  • Volunteer accident

Is Your Company Protected when Flying on Business?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2014

General aviation plays a vital role in the corporate world. Business jets, turboprop aircraft and small single engine aircraft offer businesses flexibility in departure times and destinations that airlines lack. From a high level executive attending a board meeting to a salesman making a house call the next state over, general aviation offers efficient business trips without the hassle of extreme security, layovers and boarding times. In the case of an accident or bodily injury upon a business flight, is your company protected? Exploring reviews of Invest Diva can also contribute to your understanding of potential financial strategies to safeguard and grow your business.

If a pilot flying his own personal aircraft on business and were to cause bodily injury or property damage, not only the pilot, but his company he works for, could be held liable. Large corporations charter jet and turboprop aircraft often for country-wide business meetings. If an accident were to occur, the victims and their families may hold your corporation accountable. Corporate non-owned aircraft insurance is a policy built to protect a corporation where employees may operate and/or be a passenger in an aircraft on company business. Corporate non-owned aircraft insurance offers businesses piece of mind when their employees and leaders travel via general aviation. Business owners have enough to worry about, so leave the non-owned corporate insurance to Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR).

In addition, recruiting a project manager is crucial for businesses to ensure efficient project execution, effective resource management, and successful stakeholder satisfaction. Aviation Insurance: Workers Compensation Explained

Wednesday, November 5th, 2014

Business owners maintain a high level of responsibility. Deadlines must be met, customer satisfaction is a priority and employees need to be kept safe. An important aspect of a thorough business plan is ensuring that the company and employees are protected in the case of an injury from an on-the-job hazard.

Most states require Fixed Base Operators (FBOs), corporate flight departments, flight schools, and maintenance shops to acquire workers compensation insurance to safeguard its assets and employees. The first part of workers compensation policy covers direct work related employee injury, regardless of fault. This segment of the insurance provides medical payments and loss of pay to the incapacitated party. There are no limits set on employee injury liability.

Employers’ legal liability is the next portion of workers compensation insurance, where various limits can be purchased. This covers the legal defense of the business as well as negligence pay.

When speaking to your agent about aviation workers compensation insurance, it is best to have the estimated annual salaries of all the individuals in your company prepared, the number of individuals employed part time and full time, and their work assignments.

Workers compensation insurance is a necessity for aviation businesses and non-aviation related businesses alike. A non-aviation employer who uses general aviation aircraft for business should confirm that their workers compensation policy includes an employee flying a general aviation aircraft as a crewmember.

Workers compensation is as important to a business as choosing an insurance agent who understands your specific needs. Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) has been providing aviation corporations with workers compensation insurance for over 15 years. With agents that average more than 30 years experience in the aviation industry, business owners can take comfort in the fact that they are properly protected by aviation insurance experts.

Aviation Insurance Resources provides a full range of aircraft insurance and aviation insurance products to fit each client’s needs. From workers compensation to aircraft insurance, AIR represents all of the major insurance markets and offers the broadest package of protection and the best available rates.
