Light Sport Insurance – 13 Years Later

Friday, December 15th, 2017

In 2004 the introduction of the Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) category opened new opportunities for the aviation community. Limited to two seats and a maximum speed of 120 knots, light sport aircraft do not require a medical, making it the perfect solution for aging pilots. The lighter aircraft also promised an inexpensive opportunity for students to make their aviation dreams come true with a minimum flight time of only 20 hours to become certified.

Quite a few vintage aircraft meet the conditions required under this new category, such as Piper Cubs and Aeronca Champs but many aircraft manufacturers jumped at the opportunity to market new state-of-the-art sport aircraft featuring modern avionics and complete aircraft parachutes. New aircraft emerged in both the standard and experimental LSA categories to include Flight Design, Remos, and RANS.

Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) was one of the first aviation insurance brokers to work closely with industry underwriters and sort through what was needed to properly insure light sport category aircraft. Initially, insurance rates were a concern as newly manufactured sport aircraft had higher hull values and many are built of lighter, composite material. In addition, the availability of spare parts in the case of a claim on a European built LSA was a concern.

Today, the insurance process is practically seamless for LSAs. AIR offers insurance solutions for homebuilt ELSAs during the construction process, for restoring vintage LSA qualifying aircraft, and insurance for renting or owning light sport aircraft. Time flies, and the light sport category is now well over a decade old and continues to grow.

AIR understands the budgeting needs of aircraft owners and aviation business operators, because they are pilots, too! Serving fellow pilots for over 18 years, AIR shops all the aviation insurance markets to obtain the best rate and broadest policy coverages. Sling 2 Aircraft Soars Effortlessly at the Midwest LSA Expo

Overcast skies did not subdue the excited pilots and exhibitors at the Midwest Sport Aviation Expo in Mt. Vernon, Illinois last weekend. As in years past, this free event welcomed aviation enthusiasts from around the nation to discover the latest the sport aviation industry has to offer. To Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) agent, Gregg Ellsworth, the Sling aircraft created the biggest draw.

Granted, Gregg’s opinion may be a bit biased as he quickly found himself strapped inside the Sling, enjoying the fresh breeze with the canopy pulled back, taxiing towards the runway. With the low ceiling, Gregg and instructor Andy Enos from Lapeer Flight Training in Lapeer MI, leveled off at 2,000 feet. Despite a chop in the air, Gregg performed steep turns and other maneuvers, finding the Sling to be sporty but stable and easy to fly.

“The Sling is an easy and simple aircraft to learn to fly in while still having great technological features such as the glass panel,” Gregg said after the flight. He added, “the view can’t be beat!”

AIR was instrumental in making insurance available for many new LSA aircraft entering the market and quickly became a leading LSA insurer. With access to all the aviation insurance markets, AIR is able to obtain the lowest available rates without compromising coverage. AIR is the official insurer of Lapeer Flight Training as well as Sling Dealers Midwest Sky Sports and AeroSport, both who were in attendance at the expo with their respective Sling 2 aircraft.

AIR provides a full range of aircraft insurance including other light sport aircraft such as the Flight Design, Czech Sportcruiser, CubCrafters, Evektor, Tecnam and more! AIR represents all of the major aviation insurance markets so we can offer you the broadest package of protection at the best available rates.

Looking Back on U.S. Sport Aviation Expo 2015

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015

The cloudy days did not conceal the shine in the eyes of vendors, manufacturers, dealers and pilots at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring, Florida last week. Aircraft ranged from Cub Crafters and Legend Cub to the return of Paradise Aircraft and the introduction of the new Groppo Avio Trail. All aspects of light sport aviation were represented at this unique expo.

The mood at the Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) booth was upbeat and positive as we saw an increase in attendance. Numerous pilots were taking advantage of light sport rules and returning to aviation after a long hiatus. Renter pilots were excited to find they could instantly purchase insurance for non-owned light sport aircraft on our website. And a large number of pilots also stopped by to ask questions about amphibious light sport insurance for airplanes like the Searey.

Light sport insurance quote requests included Sonex, Bristell, Tecnam, Evektor, Flight Design, Zenith, Czech Sport and Jabiru aircraft. This proves that enthusiasm for this relatively new aircraft category is still fresh; with many pilots stating the affordability of these aircraft and no need for an aviation medical as reasons why they chose light sport.

New and prospective light sport builders stopped by the AIR booth as well. We offer a builders and restorers insurance program, designed to protect the aircraft during the building or restoring stage regardless of pilot experience and qualifications. Customized with your needs in mind, this policy offers flexible liability and hull coverage options.
