Can I Fly My Plane to Cuba?

Monday, September 28th, 2015

Off limits to U.S. citizens since October of 1960, the Caribbean island of Cuba seems to be frozen in time with classic American cars lining the streets. In 1919 the first Cuban flight school opened and for decades Havanacuba 2 to Miami was a popular flight route for general aviators. Leading up to the embargo a mass exodus of private aircraft out of Cuba began, leaving once active grass strips to become overgrown and forgotten. It is now 2015 and the restrictions on travel to Cuba are becoming less restrictive. Will general aviation once again fill the skies above Havana?

Who can visit Cuba?

Despite the recent changes in restrictions on visitation to Cuba, to date Americans are still prohibited by U.S. law from travelling there for tourism purposes. A letter of approval from the State Department is no longer a requirement and they now list the following reasons that a visa will be issued to visit:

  • Family visits
  • Official business of the U.S. government
  • Foreign governments, and certain intergovernmental organizations
  • Journalistic activity
  • Professional research and professional meetings
  • Educational activities
  • Religious activities
  • Public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions, and exhibitions
  • Support for the Cuban people
  • Humanitarian projects
  • Activities of private foundations or research or educational institutes
  • Exportation, importation, or transmission of information or information materials
  • Certain authorized export transactions.

Is Cuba general aviation friendly?

Cuba                As with other out-of-country travel, aircraft must leave and enter the United States and Cuba through Airports of Entry (AOE). The invisible border in the air between the U.S and Cuba is a serious one. In 1996 the Cuban Air Force shot down two Cessna Skymasters that were releasing leaflets, killing four individuals. Tensions have eased, however, traveling international boundaries should never be treated lightly. Aircraft wishing to travel to Cuba are granted temporary sojourn licenses on a case-by-case basis. Companies such as Caribbean Flying Adventures are offering guided tours to the Caribbean, including Cuba, helping you through all the rules and regulations from the planning period through the actual flight. Jettly can also help you in chartering a private jet for your trip.

Does your insurance cover travel to Cuba?

The territory portion of your aircraft insurance policy governs where your aircraft is covered to fly. With embargo restrictions being eased, several insurance carriers are extending coverage to the island of Cuba. So far, these trips are approved on a case-by-case basis. The insurance company will ask the reason of the visit (must fit within one of the 12 categories listed previously), the dates, length and route of the trip, as well as who will be joining the pilot. Sometimes there may be an additional fee and/or higher deductibles placed for that trip.

As regulations and US/Cuban relations continue to change it is important to remain up to date on all travel requirements. As pilots themselves, the agents at Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) always stay up-to-date on matters affecting their favorite mode of travel as well as the insurance implications. To learn more about your insurance policy and if you may be able to visit Cuba, contact a knowledgeable aviation insurance expert at 301-682-6200. Victoria will be in the AIR booth with copies of books one and two from the Turbo series. She is offering a $2 discount on book purchases to those who request an aviation insurance quote during the show.

A Simple Path to UAV/UAS Insurance

Thursday, June 11th, 2015

Unmanned aircraft is a fast growing segment of aviation. Remote aerial photography used for weddings or real estate videos, line patrol, surveillance, agriculture and conservation are just a few of trades that are successfully broadening their business with UAV/UAS use. But with this growth comes an increased risk of liability.

Unfortunately, there has been no simple way to get liability insurance for your drone…until now. Previously, operators of smaller UAVs like those used for aerial photography, have had to fill out volumes of paperwork before obtaining a UAV insurance quote. Now thanks to the ingenuity of the aviation insurance agents at Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR), there is a quick and easy way to apply for drone liability insurance!

As the UAV and UAS industry grows, AIR will keep abreast of the latest industry developments and operator needs, making sure you are properly insured for the future. DC Flying Club Serves Pilots for 40+ Years

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

InnFlyingClubIn July 1967 15 pilots met around a table at the Charcoal Inn in Gaithersburg, MD. After that organizational meeting the Inn Flying Club, named after that very restaurant was formed.  This not-for-profit flying club has been serving student pilots and pilots in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area continuously ever since.

Historically, the Inn Flying Club has owned several Cessna 152s, Cessna 172s, as well as a Cessna 182 and Cessna 207. Currently, they are the proud owners of an IFR equipped Cessna Skyhawk. Each aircraft that has been owned by the club is meticulously cared for by experienced members of the club. Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanics and certified flight instructors are also members of therefore ensuring safe flying through aircraft care and flight training.

Join Inn!

A popular method for cutting aircraft ownership costs is by simply sharing the expenses. This can be done by getting a partner in the aircraft or joining a flying club like the Inn Flying Club. When someone buys a share in an aircraft partnership or a flying club, the annual aircraft costs are distributed amongst the group, resulting in less out of pocket expenses and more time in the air for the pilot.

The Inn Flying club is currently accepting applications for new members! Please visit here to read about the application process.

AIR Assists with Air Ambulance Insurance

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

Each day, numerous aircraft provide lifesaving medical transports. Air ambulances transfer individuals out of dangerous situations and direct to a hospital for medical treatment as well as provide comfortable transport for non-emergency patients that require specific care. The NTSB estimates that over 4.3 million individuals have been transported by this method since 1972.

According to the FAA, around 1,515 helicopters are operated by air ambulance companies in the United States. These rotorcraft perform around 400,000 transports each year compared to about 150,000 performed by fixed wing aircraft. With industry growth more than tripling since the 1980’s, helicopters have become the hastiest way to save an individual’s life in the case of a medical emergency.

Around one third of rotorcraft in the global market are produced by Airbus Eurocopter. Commonly used for air ambulance services, the EC130 and AS350 Ecureuil models offer low operating costs while flying faster and further than ever before. Bell and Agusta helicopters also make up a large majority of air ambulance rotorcraft fleets.

For more long range medical services, aerial ambulance programs depend on fixed wing aircraft. Ranging from twin engine, twin turbine and jet propelled aircraft, fixed wing air ambulances provide transport for high risk patients in a comfortable and private setting. In addition to professional air ambulance carriers, many patient airlift charities exist as well.

Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) would like to thank the dedicated professionals piloting air ambulances and the paramedics who treat and monitor the patients in flight.  We assist this life-saving industry by shopping all of the aviation insurance markets to provide the best air ambulance insurance rates at the broadest coverage available. To support your air ambulance business, give AIR a call at 301-682-6200 or request a quote online today!

Benefits of this new skydiving policy include: favorable deductibles, higher limits of liability and lower rates.

Why is Bruce the Pilot “So Very Happy”?

Wednesday, May 6th, 2015

Bruce Jenkins and his wife, Barbara fly a Piper Arrow out of Frederick, MD. Bruce shares with us his history in aviation and how flying and placing his insurance with Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) has made him “so very happy”.

As a product of the World War II generation, I was always interested in airplanes and flying. As a young boy, whenever an airplane would pass over I’d be looking up to see if I could identify it. We lived in the country about 20 miles west of Rochester, NY so there wasn’t a great deal of air traffic and most of it was visible because it flew at the mid-altitudes. There was also the occasional Stearman crop duster to watch on our Bruce Jenkinsneighbors’ farms.

When I attended college I took a few lessons in the J3 Cubs the university owned but never soloed because I couldn’t afford the $6/hour rental. That was the dual rate, wet. Those were the days when everything was about 25 cents: a pack of cigarettes, a bottle of beer, a gallon of high-test gasoline, a bowling game, etc.

As soon as I could afford it after graduation from Purdue, getting a job, getting married, buying a house, and doing all the things my generation was expected to do I found one of the local flight schools in Rochester, NY and started taking lessons in Piper Cherokees. I later bought a Cherokee 140 with a partner and earned my instrument rating in that airplane. At the same time my wife became interested in pursuing her private license. We then bought our 1969 Arrow in 1976 and have had it ever since.

All of our flights to different destinations, especially to the west coast, have been some of my favorites. When you can experience something so different from any experience you’ve previously had, that certainly makes an impression. I also remember some of my flights, usually solo, when the sky was so beautiful at sunrise or sunset that I didn’t really want to land.

The best advice I could offer regarding aviation is: “Don’t Wait” If you want to start flying start as soon as you can. If you want to work on additional ratings, start as soon as you can. Because the more you fly, the sooner you add proficiency, the safer you will be as a pilot and the more you will enjoy flying.

After insuring with one direct writing company for years I finally called Aviation Insurance Resources. They saved me over 29%! Jon is the very best insurance agent I have met regarding service and taking an interest in his customers. I also consider him a friend. Interestingly, my very first flight instructor (after college) now owns an airport and FBO in upstate New York (5G0) and has his insurance through AIR, too. All I can say to the professionals at Aviation Insurance Resources is “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy!”

Are you a current client and friend of ours? We’d love to hear how we have made you “So Very Happy”, too! Are you new to AIR? We’d want to make you happy as well! As fellow aircraft owners, AIR understands your needs and challenges in owning an aircraft and/or aviation business. We are aviation insurance experts, providing a full range of aircraft insurance and aviation insurance products to clients of all sizes. Managing Mitsubishi MU-2 Insurance

Wednesday, April 29th, 2015
MU2

Photo from MU-2aircraft.com

For corporate or cargo operations or perhaps just family flying, the Mitsubishi MU-2 twin turboprop is a perfect aircraft for a pilot or owner wanting something large and fast. Reaching cruise speeds of 320 knots and a range of up to 1,600 miles, Aviation Safety Magazine recently highlighted the MU-2 reporting how this aircraft’s past reputation has greatly improved since the FAA changed the training requirements in this model.

Produced in the late 60’s through the 1980’s, the MU-2 came in two variations: the short body featuring 6-8 seats and the long body that can be equipped with 8 to 14 seats. But it’s not the size of this aircraft that caused pilots to determine it was difficult to fly. As Dave Higdon highlights in Aviation Safety, a closer look needed to be taken at pilot training in the MU-2.

In 2009 the FAA took an unprecedented step to secure safer flying in the MU-2 by mandating a type rating for all who fly it. Currently, only aircraft weighing more than 12,500 pounds require a type rating. The Special Federal Aviation Rule 108 (SFAR 108) lays out the standardized training that has greatly reduced the number of fatalities in the seven years since it was implemented.

Aircraft insurance carriers are becoming more open to insuring the MU-2 and AIR shops all of them, therefore, obtaining the best terms in the market. If you are a current or prospective MU-2 owner, know that you have options. AIR will help explore them for you.

To learn more about how Aviation Insurance Resources can assist you with your Mitsubishi MU-2 or other twin turboprop insurance, please call 301-682-6200. You may also visit AIR PROS.com today and request your insurance quote online!

That is why each year we shop Matthew’s insurance with all the aviation insurance markets to ensure he is obtaining the best rates and a policy that fits his needs. We save Matthew time and money so he can focus on what he does best: giving shelter dogs a second chance.

FlyPups motto is: “Where dogs find hope, and people find friends.” On Mathew’s first dog rescue flight, he found his forever friend in a beagle mix he named Piper.

Finding a Home at AIR

AIR agent Victoria Neuville Zajko also found her four legged co-pilot through aviation. Victoria and her husband, Bob, rescued their dog Turbo in 2012. They flew to West Virginia in their Glasair to pick him up and Turbo has logged over 75 hours flying along with them ever since. He has been to Canada, the Bahamas, and many points in between.

Turbo quickly took to flight and his story inspired Victoria to write one of her own. With co-author Kelly Kennedy and illustrator Michelle Zajko the Turbo the Flying Dog children’s book series developed. Promoting animal rescue and teaching kids about aviation, Turbo the Flying Dog is best for children ages 4 to 8. Book two, Turbo Learns to Fly¸ will be released June 13th.
