Aircraft Insurance and the Adventurous AirCam

Friday, February 26th, 2016

There is one type of flight that every pilot yearns for: low and slow with the wind kissing your face. Originally designed for aerial photography in the Ndoki rain forest in Congo for National Geographic, the Lockwood AirCam is an agile, open cockpit, tandem seat, multi-engine aircraft. As the pilots and agents at Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) can attest to, the AirCam is a plane built for adventure!

Pilots mouths drop when they read the specs on AirCam aircraft. It can take off in as little as 100 feet and land in under 500. Burning as few as 3.5 gallons per hour, the two Rotax 912 engines provide the AirCam with a cruising speed of anywhere from 50 to 100 miles per hour all with a stall speed of only 39 miles per hour. With up to a 2,000 feet per minute rate of climb, the AirCam is the best aircraft for small backcountry strips and remote areas. But the AirCam is not limited to only departing from the ground, it can be equipped with floats as well!

Certain aircraft create a loyal following and pilots will agree that there aren’t many high performance piston singles quite like the Rockwell Commander. This four seat, low wing aircraft was developed by Rockwell International in the early 70s. The rights were sold to Gulfstream American and later to Commander Aircraft in 1988. Although production ended in 2002, Commander 112s and 114s remain a greatly beloved aircraft.

The Commander 112

When Rockwell was designing the Commander Aircraft they started with a fixed gear version, the 111 as well as the retract version, the 112. Ultimately, the Commander 112 was the aircraft that made it to production with a 200hp I0-360 engine. Other models would follow, the 112A, 112B and the 112TC and 112TCA versions each with excellent tweaks to include increasing maximum takeoff weight and adding a turbocharged engine on the TC and TCA models.

The Commander 114

In 1976 the Commander 114 was introduced featuring a 260 horsepower engine. Three additional models followed: the 114A increased takeoff weight, the 114B featured a new propeller and updated cowling while the 114TC was turbocharged. The 114 hit cruise speeds of around 157 knots, almost 20 knots faster than its predecessor.

The Commander Owners Group

Rockwell Commander fans can join other enthusiasts with a membership to The Commander Owners Group (COG). COG sponsors an annual fly in and the website hosts a wealth of commander information in their news section and in their member forums. Membership is just $75 a year. To join, visit https://www.commander.org/.

AIR FAQ – Aviation Premises Insurance

Monday, February 8th, 2016

Q: Does my aircraft insurance policy include aviation premises coverage? I don’t own my hangar, I rent it from the local airport authority. If someone injures themselves inside the hangar, could I be held hangar 1responsible?

A: Aviation premises insurance comes into play if a person becomes liable for property damage or bodily injury in connection with the hangaring of an aircraft.  Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) works with all of the major aviation insurance markets and a majority of them include premises liability automatically in their policy’s expansion endorsement. If it is not included, don’t worry! Aviation premises liability coverage can be added for as little as $500 a year with limits of up to $5 million liability!

If you are a hangar owner, a hangar insurance policy protects the building, contents and provides bodily injury liability coverage. Loss of business income, electronic equipment, tools, mobile equipment, fuel tanks and business personal property are additional coverages that can also be added. Coverage can even be issued even when the hangar is in the building stage!

If you are unsure of what coverage you require, ask the pilots and agents at AIR by calling 877-247-7767 or visiting www.AIR-PROS.com today! You have a hangar to protect your aircraft, and you have AIR to protect YOU!

Mooney Aircraft Insurance – Revisited

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016

In June of 2013, we published one of our most popular blogs on Mooney Aircraft insurance. Since the original posting, Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) has continued to provide prospective and current Mooney owners with superior customer service while obtaining the best insurance rates and the broadest coverage available. Read on to find out why Mooney Aircraft has become a quick pilot favorite over the years.

June 24, 2013 – Christopher Wolbert, Regional Vice President of AIR completed his instrument rating in a Mooney twenty years ago. Despite the time that has passed, Mooney aircraft remain one of his favorite Mooney-Aircraft-Insurance-300x225aircraft manufacturers.

“Until that point, I had completed most of my pilot training in Cessna Aircraft. The Mooney was a new and exciting experience. The aircraft’s additional speed combined with instrument training made my training challenging, but rewarding.” Chris remembers.

Founded in 1929 by Al Mooney in Wichita, Kansas, the Mooney Airplane Company has carved its place in aviation history because of its dedication to performance and innovation. Mooney has always focused on producing the highest-performing, safest and most efficient aircraft on the market. It is this focus that has allowed Mooney to set several aviation records, including:

  1. First pressurized single-engine, piston-powered aircraft (M22 Mustang).
  1. Fastest transcontinental flight in a single-engine, piston-powered production aircraft (M20K 231).
  2. First production aircraft to achieve 200 mph on 200HP (M20J 201).
  3. Several altitude records (M20K 231).
  4. First single-engine, power-control certified (FADEC) in the U.S. (M20L Porsche).
  5. Fastest piston-powered aircraft currently in production (M20M DX single).
  6. First single-engine aircraft certified for flight into known icing conditions (M20M DX w/TKS anti-icing system).
  7. More than 130 world speed records.
  8. First single-engine retractable to achieve 237 KTS (M20).
  9. And More!

Mooney aircraft combine legendary speed, robust rate-of-climb, rock-solid safety and security, innovative technology, hand-built precision craftsmanship, and unmatched value.

The Mooney Airplane Company – which has delivered more than 11,000 aircraft worldwide, a fleet that has amassed more than 40 million hours of flight – currently sells three models of the M20: Ovation2 GX, Ovation3 and Acclaim.

How to get the best rate on your aircraft insurance in one easy step!

Monday, January 25th, 2016

Before purchasing an aircraft, most pilots complete a cost analysis to determine the annual expenses and sustainability of aircraft ownership. Lower aircraft expenses generally mean more time in the air for the Over Brunswick 2010-01-31pilot and ways to safely cut these costs are often pursued. While aircraft insurance is a smaller percentage of annual aircraft expenses, it is an area that is worth the extra research to reduce rates. One company takes the challenge out of finding the lowest rate for your aircraft insurance while maintaining the broadest package of protection.

Founded by two pilots in 1999, Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) solicits quotations from the major underwriters that would be the most competitive for the type of flying you do and the coverages you require. Smartphone App Seeks to Improve UAV/UAS Safety

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016

The FAA estimates that over 30,000 unmanned aerial vehicles could be flying within the next ten years. With increased traffic in the skies, it is important that UAV/UAS operators remain vigilant and safe. B4UFLYWedding videographers and real estate agents are just two fields where drone use has become quite prevalent and where incidents have occurred. Line patrol, surveillance, agriculture and conservation add to the list of trades enhancing their businesses with UAV/UAS use. Without safety measures in place, a company’s future can be severely jeopardized if a suit were to be filed against them. Luckily, a smart phone app developed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is now available to assist in safely operating your UAV or UAS.

B4UFLY is a simple application to help point the user to any restrictions within their area. B4UFLY contains a flight status indicator that pulls publicly available information from the FAA and alerts the user the status of the current location. For example, at the time of writing this blog in our headquarters in Frederick, MD the status alert was yellow: Use Caution and Check Restrictions. If you click the “other guidance button” the app alerts you to: Restricted airspace, airports within 5 miles, upcoming restrictions and any national parks that may be nearby. All this can be found by using the first tab, labeled “status”. Other indication colors are green and red to help determine your go/no-go deicison.

Three more tabs complete the B4UFLY app. The map tab shows airspace, much like a sectional chart and contains icons for airports and heliports in the area. There is also a flight planner tab where the user can enter a future location and/or date to receive information on an upcoming UAV launch. Finally, the “more” tab provides helpful links as well as lists of US airports, national parks and current Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs).

B4UFLY is currently available for iPhone devises and a Beta version went into testing for Android users on January 6th. Android users are encouraged to opt-in to participate in the beta test through the first quarter of 2016.

Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) entered the UAV/UAS insurance market early, immediately ready to serve the needs of drone operators. UAV and UAS owners have been depending on AIR for superior customer service, insurance and aviation knowledge. With liability insurance from AIR and the help of the FAA’s B4UFLY smart phone application, UAV operators can invest in a safer future!

B4UFLY can be downloaded through the iOS app store and the beta version for Android users is available in Google Play. For more information on B4UFLY visit the FAA webpage on the application at: https://www.faa.gov/uas/b4ufly/. Aviation Manufacturer Product Liability

Monday, January 4th, 2016

While a majority of aircraft accidents are result of pilot error, occasionally a product defect is deemed the probable cause behind an aircraft accident or incident. Aircraft are intricate machines madeEngine up of thousands of parts, both stationary and moving. Besides large components such as the engine or landing gear, many small parts such as switches, valves, caps and even bolts can play a role in aircraft safety. If you supply or manufacture a component used in an aircraft, you may be held legally liable in the event of a claim. An aviation manufacturer product liability policy can protect your business’s financial interests.

Who may need product liability coverage?

Aircraft manufacturers, STC modification builders, avionics, instrument and interior manufactures are all at risk for product liability. If your company distributes or builds aircraft propellers, sheet metal, brakes, tires, lights, etc., it is important to look into product liability. Any business that is responsible for a component that ends up in an aircraft could be held liable in the event of a lawsuit.

Three types of risk

Not all aircraft products or manufacturers are alike. However, each share three types of risk in regards to their product:

Design defect – The complete line of products is inherently dangerous.

Manufacturing defect – The component falls short in being produced appropriately.

Failure to warn – The manufacture of the product did not provide substantial instructions and warnings on the correct use of the part.

Product Protection

An aviation manufacturer product liability policy will provide a defense in the case of property damage, bodily injury or the grounding of a fleet due to a product hazard. The aviation insurance specialists at Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) are dedicated to protecting your business and its future. AIR will guide you through the insurance process to provide you with peace of mind as your company serves the aviation industry. Pilot Spotlight: Kyle Grim, Skydiver turned Pilot

Monday, December 21st, 2015

Kyle, tell us about how you got your start in aviation.

I was always the kid who wanted to be an astronaut. My teachers told me I had my head up in the clouds, but they didn’t have any idea how right they were! I was able to put myself through skydiving training by Kylepacking parachutes until my fingers bled, but once I finished my engineering degree I crammed my first few paychecks into a Cessna 152’s gas tank and the rest is history.

You regularly fly with your girlfriend, Tara. Why do you enjoy sharing aviation with others?

Flying with others is the best way to keep from taking things for granted. Little things like talking on the radio fascinate the uninitiated. It brings joy to all corners of the experience! Tara has been flying for a few years now, and even though she’s used to it she still points things out to me about the experience that I’m used to taking in stride. Also, taking passengers is a great way to keep from becoming complacent, as you find yourself worrying more for their safety than your own.

What was one of your most memorable flights?

My flight from Lantana (KLNA) airport in West Palm Beach back home to Frederick MD (KFDK) two Christmases ago gave me a run for my money. A 9-hour flight in my Rans turned into a 3-day adventure with 100 miles of Florida/Georgia beaches, sleeping on FBO couches, trading sandwiches for pre-heats and making new friends in aviation! Long distance VFR is always a challenge but that trip was one for the books.

What is the best piece of aviation related advice you have received?

An Israeli skydiving instructor once gripped my by both shoulders and yelled, “No more stupid!”

How did you first get in touch with your AIR friends, Jon and Victoria?

I first met Jon while taxiing past his open hangar in my 1st airplane, a 1/2 VW powered Preceptor Pup. I wanted to check out his Pitts and he wanted to check out the Pup! I met Victoria while she was making preparations for a women in aviation event in between hangars on our airport. AIR is fantastic because they’re pilots and they love their work.

Why do you trust your insurance to AIR?

I know that Jon and Victoria care about me as a person more than they care about my plane or my policy. I have no doubt that if I ever need to make a claim they’ll be more interested in making sure I’m OK than Kyle 2anything else.

Anything else you would like to share?

Being insured through AIR makes me feel free to enjoy my life in aviation! Just keep an eye out for those Florida thunderstorms.

Pilots Protecting Pilots

All agents at AIR are pilots or come from a strong background in aviation. When you call AIR, you will always find yourself talking to a person who is as excited about your aircraft as you are.
